Many people struggle with time and find it difficult to meet deadlines. I recently heard the story of Amara a working young professional in Lagos, always overwhelmed by her seemingly never-ending to-do list and frantic late-night scramble to get everything accomplished on schedule.

Whatever she did, she felt stuck, accomplishing nothing, and unhappy, always complaining that there just weren’t enough hours in the day. Her personal life wasn’t left untouched either—birthdays forgotten, friends stood up, and little or nothing for herself. A mentor gave her a book  one dayon time management skills. Doubtful but craving transformation, Amara began putting her new lessons into practice. She first scheduled tasks separating activities that were important and urgent from the ones that weren’t.

She started getting up an hour earlier each morning and used that serene time to plan out her goals for the next day. She embarked on breaking work into focused intervals with frequent pauses. The changes were subtle but profound. With a clearer plan for her day, Amara was getting work done faster with fewer knots of anxiety. Meetings that used to last an eternity now flew by employing her new skill at agenda-setting. She even managed to fit in time to meet up with old friends and paint again, something she had abandoned years ago.

Months later, Amara not only excelled at work, being promoted, but also regained her personal life. Time was no longer the nemesis for her but a buddy. She understood the transformation was not due to the additional time she had but because she utilized the time she had more effectively. One thing every human being on earth possesses in equal quantity is twenty-four hours a day. How we use our time determines how much we can achieve. When we plan our time, we plan our lives.
